Laptop Won't Turn On? 8 Things to Try First
You press the power button and nothing happens: no lights, no fan, no logo. Or the lights come on but the screen stays black. It’s stressful when your work, school files or family photos are on that laptop.
A laptop that won’t turn on usually still works. Go through these fixes in order, from quickest to most involved.
First, is it off or is the screen just black?
These are two different problems:
- If there are no lights, no fan noise and no keyboard backlight, the laptop isn’t getting power. The cause is usually the charger, battery or charging port, so start at fix 1.
- If the lights or fan come on but the screen stays black, the laptop has power and the problem is the display or startup. Skip to fix 5.
1. Check the charger and the outlet
- Plug something else into the same outlet to make sure it works. Skip the power bar for now.
- Look for a light on the charger brick or the laptop’s charging indicator.
- Check the cable for kinks, frayed spots or a bent tip, especially where it meets the plug.
- If you have another compatible charger, try it. Many USB-C laptops can use another USB-C laptop charger of similar wattage.
A charger that stopped working is one of the most common reasons a laptop suddenly won’t turn on.
2. Leave it charging for 30 minutes
A completely drained battery sometimes won’t respond right away. Plug it in, leave it for at least 30 minutes, then hold the power button for 2 or 3 seconds instead of tapping it.
3. Do a hard reset
A hard reset drains leftover power and clears a stuck power state, which fixes a lot of laptops that seem dead.
- Unplug the charger and any USB devices.
- If the battery comes out, remove it.
- Hold the power button for 30 seconds.
- Put the battery back (if you removed it) and plug in only the charger.
- Press the power button normally.
If the battery is built in, hold the power button for 30 to 60 seconds with the charger unplugged. Some models also have a small reset pinhole on the bottom; your manufacturer’s support site will say.
On a MacBook, connect the charger, hold the power button for 10 seconds, let go, then press it again. On older Intel MacBooks, an SMC reset (Shift + Control + Option + power for 10 seconds) can also help.
4. Look at the charging port
Shine a light into the charging port. Lint, debris or a loose connector can stop power getting through. If the laptop only charges when you hold the cable at a certain angle, the port is probably damaged. That’s a common repair.
5. Lights on but a black screen? Test the display
If you can hear the fan or see the keyboard lights:
- Turn up the brightness with the keyboard brightness keys. It happens more often than you’d think.
- Connect an external monitor or TV with HDMI or USB-C. If a picture appears there, the laptop works and the problem is the screen or its cable.
- On Windows, press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. This restarts the graphics driver and can wake a black screen.
6. Unplug everything and remove recent additions
USB drives, docks, SD cards and even a new memory upgrade can stop a laptop from starting. Remove everything except the charger and try again.
7. Listen for beeps and watch for blinking lights
Many laptops report hardware faults with beep patterns or blinking power and charging lights, for example a set number of amber and white blinks. Count the pattern and search for it along with your laptop’s make and model. It often points to the faulty part, such as the memory or the battery.
8. Did it get wet, dropped or hot?
If the laptop had a spill or a fall, or got very hot before it stopped working, stop trying to turn it on. With liquid damage especially, pressing the power button over and over can do more harm. Unplug it, leave it off, and get it looked at as soon as you can. Acting quickly often saves the laptop, and it almost always saves the files.
Will my files be OK?
In most cases, yes. The storage drive inside is usually fine even when the laptop won’t power on, and the files can be copied to a new computer or an external drive. If the laptop isn’t worth repairing, ask about data recovery before you recycle it.
